Location: New York Life

As part of the New York Life Foundation’s commitment to increasing awareness, access, and resources for childhood bereavement, we are pleased to invite you to the 2023 Day of Learning. Hosted on November 1, 2023, to jump start Childhood Grief Awareness Month, please consider joining us either virtually or in person in New York City (as space allows) for a series of panels with industry experts to share the latest data, best practices, stories, and resources. We will hear from school professional organizations and specific school systems on their experiences through grief and crisis, featuring our keynote address from David Banks, the Chancellor of the New York City public school system. Coming together as one community, we seek to elevate this issue as a public priority that deserves more attention.

Childhood bereavement is common yet frequently overlooked. According to the Childhood Bereavement Estimation Model developed by Judi’s House, 1 in 12 children will experience a death of a parent or sibling by age 18, with that same statistic arising from 1 in 15 just five years ago. With growing needs due to the unprecedented number of mass tragedies, the pandemic, and the frequency of everyday grief, it is increasingly evident that, as a community, we need to understand how we can best support the youth behind these statistics.

Understanding that childhood bereavement support would be stronger as a collaborative effort, in 2013 the New York Life Foundation partnered with the National Center for School Crisis and Bereavement and ten school professional organizations to launch the Coalition to Support Grieving Students. Since its founding, the coalition has grown to include more than 135 professional organizations and has developed an expansive set of resources for children, parents, and communities supporting bereaved youth. On this Day of Learning, we will honor the dedicated efforts and impact of the Coalition to Support Grieving Students and the Grief-Sensitive Schools Initiative® as we look to the future of the field.

Any professionals who work with bereaved children and youth are welcome to attend. We hope that this day provides valuable information and inspires you to take action to support bereaved families.
